Need some caffeine to start the school year? Here’s a creative way to send some love to your child, your child’s new teacher, or even yourself! I taught high school and middle school for several years, and I would have loved to receive one of these boxes as a first-day gift!

Here’s what you need, and how to make it. If you don’t yet know how to make cake balls or cake pops, practice that skill first!

Ingredients and Supplies

  • Cake Balls, in your choice of flavor(s)
  • White chocolate
  • White fondant (make your own, or purchase readymade)
  • 6″ (or shorter) lollipop sticks
  • Piping bags for melted chocolate
  • Milk chocolate
  • Black-colored chocolate/candy coating
  • Pink-colored luster dust
  • Gold sugar crystals
  • Food-safe small paintbrush (for applying luster dust)
  • Cellophane bags & twist-ties (optional)
  • ClearBags Box: FPB256
  • Printable Peel-and-stick Labels

Most of these supplies can be purchased on Amazon. Here’s a link to the list:

https://www.amazon.com/shop/sweetwhimsyshop Before you start working with the cake and chocolate coating, use the white fondant to make small handles for the mugs. Allow the handles to dry several hours, or overnight, before starting to make the mug cake pops. Watch video here: https://youtu.be/J74eZMNuWqw

For the cake pops: start with cake balls in your choice of flavor. I chose both chocolate and vanilla cake. Choose 2 cake balls that will be formed into cylinders. The other 2 will be rolled into spheres.

For the cylinder-shaped cake pops, use a flat object like a knife, fondant smoother, or even a ruler to roll the cake ball into shape. Use that same tool to flatten the top and bottom. See video here: https://youtu.be/JemxUO4PvZs

Then, dip the tip of a lollipop stick into the melted white chocolate candy coating. Then insert stick into the cake ball (cylinder) as shown, and set aside to allow for the melted chocolate to cool and harden.

Meanwhile, roll the 2 remaining cake balls into spheres. Then repeat the same process as above to place the cake balls on the lollipop sticks, using the melted white chocolate. Set aside to cool/harden.

Take one cylinder cake pop and dip it in the melted white chocolate. Remove the excess chocolate by either tapping the lollipop stick against the edge of the chocolate container, or by tapping the lollipop stick with your hand or an object like a blunt table knife. Use a toothpick to pop any air bubbles that surface. Then, attach one fondant handle before the chocolate cools/hardens. Repeat with other cake pop. Watch video here: https://youtu.be/4meJHkK0R_c

Repeat with the 2 round cake pops, but before the cake pops cool, sprinkle with gold sugar, as shown. Watch video here: https://youtu.be/h4ou6KNYly4

Once the mug cake pops have cooled. Use a piping bag to pipe melted milk chocolate along the top of each mug, to form the “coffee.” Watch video here: https://youtu.be/OEQfm3jQGQA

Then use a piping bag with melted black candy coating to pipe each face. Finish by adding “blush” using the food-safe paint brush dipped in the pink luster dust.

Once all 4 cake pops are finished and cooled/hardened, wrap each in a clear cellophane bag with wire twist-tie.

Then use the box to package them. Alternate styles so each end has a Coffee Mug and a Gold Sugar cake pop on it. Don’t forget to add your business card to the box! Use the clear adhesive circles that come with your box purchase to seal each end of the box.

Finish with a printed label. If you print on peel-and-stick labels, you can adhere the label to the box after coloring it in. Or, use a hole punch and string to attach the label like a gift tag on a wrapped gift. So easy right?! Thanks for following along and let us know in the comments section what you think!
