Fall is here and it's time for EVERYTHING PUMPKIN! I'm for sure one of those crazy ladies who decorates her entire house with pumpkins, bakes all the pumpkin things and has a pumpkin candle burning at all times.

I decided to turn Clearbag's adorable 5" x 5" x 5" Crystal Clear bottom Pop & Lock Boxes into candy pumpkin boxes with tags that say, 'Thanks Pumpkin".

Can you guess what type of bag can be dressed up with ribbons and handle delicate cupcakes and large, awkward products? If you answered gusset bag, you are a packaging genius! What makes gusset bags special is that they are made with extra material to increase the strength and volume of the bag. That makes gusset bags a great choice for packaging bulk items, decorative food, and other irregular-shaped products. For such products, a little wiggle room makes all the difference.

What is a gusset anyway?

"Gusset" is not exactly an everyday term. To keep it simple, a gusset is extra material that is added to either the sides or the the bottom of the bag to give it more space. Gusset bags are folded and sealed in such a way as to eliminate the "dog ears" commonly see with non-gusseted bags, and thus create a package that expands with your product. The gusset also strengthens the overall structure of the bag, giving products more support and providing a more form-fitting bag that adapts to products like bread, cookies, popcorn, and candy.

Two Kinds of Gussets - Side and Bottom

The location of the gusset determines whether the bag is a side gusset bag or a bottom gusset bag. Each type of of bag is useful for different areas of packaging. Here is the simple difference between the two: Side gusset bags have expandable sides while bottom gussets have expandable bottoms.

Because side gusset bags have expandable sides, irregular-shaped items like bread and rolls work especially well. On the other hand, a bottom gusset bag, such as a stand up pouch, is a popular choice for snacks and bulk items because it allows the bag to expand when filled.

Which type of bag is best for you?

Gussets come in many styles, all offering a little something different. As with any packaging decision, the first thing to think about is what you are packaging:

Who Is Elly Olive Oil?. My idea was to create a single serving of a perfectly proportioned blend of extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar designed as a vinaigrette for a salad, bread dipping or a complement to any entree or appetizer. I wanted the vinaigrette to come in an environmentally friendly glass bottle that is both recyclable and reusable with a tamper evident cap. I also wanted the quality of the ingredients and the packaging to be exceptional. I wanted the brand name and logo to have a trendy, vibrant, classy look. With much passion, enthusiasm and research needed to complete my idea, I found no room for compromise. One year later with my Mom's creative input, I completed my idea, bringing an individual serving size of Elly Olive Oil Balsamic Vinaigrette's to you, your home and your friends for any and all occasions. The name "Elly" comes from the Greek word for Olives, Elies!

Elly Olive Oil Vinaigrettes come in a glass Marasca bottle which are both recyclable and reusable with a tamper evident cap. We offer 9 flavored vinaigrette's!

How do you package your products and what ClearBags products do you use?

Elly Olive Oil Balsamic Vinaigrettes are packaged individually by hand in 2, 4, or 6 Pack Crystal Clear Boxes and also packaged in the Kraft 2 Piece Folding Box with a Crystal Clear Slip Cover. All boxes are for packaging food products and purchased only with ClearBags!

Where do you sell your products?

Elly Olive Oil Balsamic Vinaigrettes are sold in specialty food and grocery stores, wineries, cafes, hotels and resorts and at international airport gift shops in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our 2 pack of Balsamic Vinaigrettes is a popular amenity for guests at hotels and cruise lines, as well as an excellent wedding, bridal, anniversay, birthday and baby shower favors, and as a corporate gift item.

How long have you been working with ClearBags and How does ClearBags help you to succeed?

Elly Olive Oil has been working with ClearBags since the launching of our company over 4 years ago and we continue to work with ClearBags. ClearBags has always met our needs providing a quality box for our product which our customers continue to compliment us on and enjoy.

What one piece of packaging advice would you give to other business owners?

The one piece of advice I would give to other business owners is to follow through with how they want their product to look in a package and be presented to their customers. Business owners should continue to search until they find the right packaging and also listen to the advice of the packaging experts, such as ClearBags. They can advise and enlighten businesses on how to enhance their product with their packaging.
