Tell us a little about your company:
Sweet Whimsy Shop was created in 2012 when I stepped away from my career as a middle school teacher, and needed something to supplement the income. A year earlier, I had used Angie Dudley’s book “Cake Pops” to teach myself how to make the sweet treat. Cake pops are lollipop-style balls of cake that are covered in a chocolate coating and often decorated with sprinkles, candies, or other decorative edibles.
I began selling cake pops first through word-of-mouth, and then online through Etsy. I now have my own website and mainly use Instagram and Facebook to market my products. While I do still make a lot of simple round cake pops, most of my clients want sculpted designs. I make a lot of super cute or “kawaii” style designs, like hot cocoa mugs with faces, sparkly unicorns, and cake pops that look like tiny cakes or cake slices. I’ve also expanded my offerings to include chocolate-dipped pretzels, marshmallows, and Oreos.
Every cake pop I make, whether it’s a ball or a seahorse, is hand-sculpted, and made from scratch-baked cake. My goal is to make edible art that tastes as good as it looks.
What makes your product unique?
I make artisan cake pops, without mass-production or a mechanized process, as some bakers/businesses choose to do, I don’t simply combine a boxed cake mix with eggs, water, and oil, then pour the solution into an electric cake pop maker or into sphere-shaped cups in a baking pan, and then dip those “prefab” cake balls into chocolate. The process I’ve chosen is much more labor-intensive, with a greater commitment to quality, and with careful attention to detail. My clients value that kind of quality and recognize that they are getting so much more than “just” a cake pop. I love what I do, I take a lot of pride in the method I’ve chosen, and I’m so very grateful for my faithful clients who support my craft and business!
How do you package your products and what ClearBags™ products do you use?
I’m in love with the 5 1/8” x 2” x 7 1/8” Crystal Clear Boxes [FPB326] – they fit 6 cake pops, or 12 cake balls perfectly!
Where do you sell your product?
Most customers order online ahead of time for specific dates/events, but I also sell through pop-up shops at local coffee shops and small business venues.
How long have you been working with ClearBags™ and how does ClearBags™ help you succeed?
Just a few months. A cookie maker friend of mine introduced me to the products. I loved how the clear boxes showcased the products inside. One of the best-selling features of my cake pops is how they look, so the clarity and transparency of ClearBags’s products help me capitalize on that.
What one piece of packaging advice would you give to other business owners?
Make the presentation beautiful, not just functional. Add a ribbon or logoed sticker on the front of the box, or beautiful tissue paper or paper shreds inside it, to better highlight your product and make it even more special to the customer.
