Featured Customer: NOTES & QUERIES
Tell us a little about your company:
Notes & Queries was started nearly 40 years ago by Alan Harnik, known affectionately as “Big Al” to our customers and friends. The company was conceived in Madagascar, and then nurtured from a small pushcart in Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston in the late 1970’s. At that time, Alan was selling handmade cards and crafts from Madagascar and American handmade greeting card artists. The company grew from a pushcart to a basement apartment to an old airplane factory with no heat to a 12,000 sq. warehouse in Baltimore over a period of 39 years. Even now, Alan, along with co-owner and daughter Vanessa, share the same passion for the business he had those 30 plus years ago, and Notes & Queries continues to bring you the very best in design in greeting cards and stationery from Europe and Britain.
What makes your product unique?
We curate our greeting card, stationery, packaging and gift collections from over 25 unique specialty European brands- never before seen in the American marketplace – guaranteeing that our retailers always have something really special in their stores.
How do you package your products and what ClearBagsⓇ products do you use?
Most of our product already comes packaged but have been lucky enough to work with ClearBags who created a custom bookmark sleeve for our wonderful bookmarks from leading art brand, Museums & Galleries.
Where do you sell your products?
We sell predominately to independent retailers across the United States. Over 40% of our business comes from retailers who have bought our lines for at least 15 years. But we do sell to strong multiple accounts including Barnes & Noble, Paper Source, Fresh Market, and Whole Foods
How long have you been working with ClearBags and how does ClearBags help you succeed?
We have been working together for about 18 months or so. They assisted us in providing a solution for cello sleeves for our bookmarks for Barnes & Noble who had ordered over 70,000 bookmarks on their initial order.
What one piece of packaging advice would you give to other business owners?
Keep it simple and easy to understand.
