How to Accurately Measure a Stand Up Zipper Pouch

Last Updated on July 15, 2025 by Kira Andrus

When it comes to packaging, precision matters. Whether you’re ordering samples, customizing your own design, or comparing size options, knowing how to measure properly ensures your product fits just right.
That’s why we’ve put together this quick visual guide to help you measure a pouch like a pro.

Width measures across the front of the pouch. Length measures from the top to the bottom of the pouch.
Width: Measures across the front of the pouch, side seam to side seam (outer dimensions). Inner dimensions is the space between side seams.

Length: From the very bottom of the pouch to the top of the header (outer dimensions).
The depth is measured by how big the gusset expands.
Depth: The gusset expands to provide interior space; (we measure it flat, not expanded.)
The area above the zipper is called the Header.
Header Above Zipper: The area above the zipper that can affect fill height and sealing space. The header is also where optional tear notches and a hang hole is located.

Side seams are measured by how much space is between the usable space and the edge of the bag's outer dimensions.
Side Seam Thickness: Our stock pouches have 5-7mm side seams.

Usable Space Matters:

Keep in mind that the outer dimensions of a pouch aren’t the same as their usable inner dimensions. The side seams and header above the zipper reduce how much product the pouch can actually hold. That’s why we always recommend reviewing the inner dimensions when planning your fill weight and product fit.

Understanding Capacity:

To help you estimate volume, we measure pouch capacity using whole coffee beans– a product with consistent density and shape. For accuracy and real-world use, we fill the pouch half way in these tests. Please note that capacity will vary depending on your product’s shape, density, and fill. Items like powders, candies, or bath salts will all pack differently.
