PLA Materials Explained: What You Should Know About Plant-Based Plastics
Last Updated on August 8, 2025 by Michelle Barton

As consumer demand for eco friendly options grows, plant-based materials like PLA are becoming increasingly popular. But what exactly is PLA, and is it right for your packaging needs?
What is PLA?
PLA stands for Polylactic Acid, a bioplastic made from renewable resources like cornstarch or sugarcane. Unlike traditional plastics made from fossil fuels, PLA is derived from plants, making it an appealing choice for eco-conscious brands.
Why PLA?
- Made from inexpensive renewable resources
- High Clarity
- Good rigidity
- Grease Resistant
- Heat Resistant
- Modest oxygen and moisture permeability
Is PLA Compostable?
PLA is compostable (with a small caveat). While it can break down into carbon dioxide and water, it requires specific conditions found in commercial composting facilities. PLA will decompose in industrial composters within 90-180 days. Note: PLA will not break down properly in a backyard or landfill setting. However, we do carry a line of Home Compostable alternatives.
